Read, write or review, which is for you?

What do you enjoy doing of these three or do you like them all like me?

I enjoy reading but I greatly prefer a paper book. I know the big craze lately has been digital books. I get the ease of them and the minimalist objective with digital but there is just something special about a book in one’s hand. Paper books have an amazing smell, sound of pages turning as you make your way through the story, you can also see the depth of the story that you have enjoyed to that point. To me, there is nothing better than physically watching the book unfold. The graphics feel more authentic and I feel like I’m a part of something special. Digital books are great for trips especially if you need to pack lightly but they just don’t do for me what a book in my hand does.

I love to write what comes to mind in the moment. Those are the purest pieces of writing there are. I have tried to make it a point to write digitally when my kids are in bed or outside playing so they they don’t always see me on a device. Lately, time like that has been scarce as we have had such busy schedules but I make an effort when the moments allow. I absolutely love to journal and wish I had more time to dedicate to that. I love adding moments of the day, color, stickers, pictures. Editing a beautifully prepared journal as the day plays out. Washi tape, gel pens, highlighters, stickers, stencils, clips, punches, mini photos, all amazingly fun things to add to my journals.

Reviewing is something I have had fun with for some time now. I enjoy trying products, writing or recording a review of them either unboxing or sampling them. It is so much fun to show what you like and even don’t like. Unfortunately, video reviews are very time consuming and I find myself pushing them off though I enjoy doing them so much. I know that as my kids get older, the time will be more available and I’ll be able to do more of it.

My husband and I are really enjoying watching movies together, talking them out and then recording a review commentary about them. The banter between us is fun for us in the moment and makes us laugh when we go back and listen to our conversations. We don’t record and re-record, we just discuss and use it first take! Those listening purely hear us. We do edit out dead airtime or comments that don’t fit with the review but the review itself is in the moment. We have really enjoyed doing this together and have a lot of fun watching how many take the time to listen on YouTube. We have currently gained 50 subscribers and hope to increase that to 1000 to be able to make a little monetization from all of the time we put into it. We would love for you to give us a listen and subscribe to Not Enough Thumbs!

For me, each of these things are enjoyable and I try to spread my time between them without losing interaction with my kids. It is a fine line to walk and sometimes the reading, writing and reviewing get put on the back burner. Not only do my kids require a lot of time, I try to work on organizing the house, clearing things out and consigning/selling what I can, teach childbirth classes and work as a birth doula, help co-run a kickboxing gym, attend a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym, assistant leader for our church’s children’s ministry, etc. There truly aren’t enough hours in the day. There are several other hobbies I wish I had more time to devote to like various craft categories but that is for another post.

Do you enjoy any of these things? Is there one you like more than others? Do you despise any of them? I know I am an oddity to like all three of them so let me know what you enjoy in the comments.
